Teacher of the week (Week 2, July) - “We are creating intellectual zombies”

Posted on : July 10, 2010

In a recent interview with India Today, Prof. L.S. Ganesh (IIT Madras) spoke about his concern on low quality of education delivery in India. Read his full comments below.

We agree with the points raised by him and will like share them with you. He is our teacher of the week.

“If all study is focused on marks and grades, and not getting educated, then all such study is too much. We are burdening our kids beyond what is necessary. Parents belonging to the middle class goad their children to perform well in their studies mainly because they aspire to continuously improve their family’s economic and social status. They know that high marks and grades are necessary for their children to gain “remarks spectable careers,” that would then lead to a higher status. This disposition has resulted in the educational rat race and mounting pressure on the young ones. While India is yet to experience alarming levels of education-induced suicides among its youth, the levels of insensitivity, shamelessness and stress are palpably alarming. The paradox of “educated” youth who are simultaneously “intellectual zombies” is staring at us now. We are now saddled with the extremely large problem of reinventing education to be true to its spirit. Let us lower the unnecessary burden of rote learning and give more importance to real education rather than marks and grades”.
